Up to date public transport information in the city of Alkmaar
In the spring of 2008 several bus stop displays and a overview display have been put to operation in the city of Alkmaar. These displays show the actual time of departure of buses.
The province Noord-Holland invested a lot in presenting up to date public transport information. The main goal of the province is to present up to date information regarding public transport at as many locations as possible. Therefor a new standard has been developed under the name "Transmodel".
Dutch (public) authorities, public transport operators and suppliers agreed to adjust this used to be European Transmodel standard to Dutch circumstances. An independent party will manage the standard and adjust it if necessary. It is the intention to use the Transmodel standard for public transport travel information systems all over The Netherlands.
The first bus stop displays and overview displays which operate in conformity with the new Transmodel standard have been developed by Vialis. These displays have been put to operation in the city of Alkmaar. The displays which are installed alongside the new "high-quality public transport connection" show actual times of departure of buses. The information which is needed is collected by a computer system. This computer system is located in the building of the province Noord-Holland. It receives bus timetables from various public transport operators. It also receives the actual positions of buses by GPS.
From this received information actual departure times are generated which will than be sent by GPRS communication to the bus stop and overview displays.
Vialis especially designed an entirely new product family under the name "ViaBis". This Vialis product family consists of a local controller which is located in the display housing and a central server. All of these products operate in conformity with the new Transmodel standard. All products are so called modulair products and are capable of operating with all kinds of displays (e.g. TFT screens) and formats.
